Direct Access Scheme (DAS)
Introduction
If you are aged 24 or over (or 21+ using Progressive Access), the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) allows you to obtain a full unrestricted Category A motorcycle licence by training and testing on a qualifying motorcycle.
Step 1 — Check Eligibility
Requirements:
- Age 19+ — A2 licence
- Age 21+ — Progressive Access (holding an A2 licence for 2 years)
- Age 24+ — Direct Access
- Valid UK provisional or full driving licence
- Current CBT certificate
Step 2 — Motorcycle Theory Test
You must pass the motorcycle theory and hazard perception test before booking practical tests.
You may still book:
- Step-Up training
- Module 1 training
before passing theory, but practical tests cannot be booked until your theory test has been passed.
Theory certificates remain valid for two years.
Step 3 — Step-Up Lesson
Price: £150 • Duration: 3 hours
The Step-Up lesson introduces you to a larger motorcycle before beginning full DAS training.
Your instructor will assess:
- machine control
- confidence
- riding ability
before recommending the appropriate training plan.
Equipment provided: helmet, gloves and jacket.

Step 4 — Module 1 Training
Price: £160 • Duration: 3 hours
Module 1 prepares you for the DVSA off-road riding test.
Training covers:
- manual handling
- slalom
- figure of eight
- slow speed riding
- U-turn
- cornering
- controlled stop
- emergency stop
- hazard avoidance
Equipment provided: helmet, gloves and jacket.
Please wear:

- high-ankle boots or shoes
Step 5 — Module 2 Training
Price: £160 • Duration: 3 hours
Module 2 prepares you for the approximately 40-minute on-road DVSA riding test.
Training covers:
- junctions
- roundabouts
- traffic management
- independent riding
- road positioning
- safe riding techniques
Equipment provided: helmet, gloves and jacket.

- high-ankle boots or shoes
After Passing
Successfully passing Module 1 and Module 2 on a DAS-compliant motorcycle awards you a full unrestricted Category A Motorcycle Licence.

- No L plates
- Carry passengers
- Ride on motorways
- Ride unrestricted motorcycles
